Sisters of the East End
At the Jubilee drapers, amongst the spools of ribbon, skeins of silk and latest 30s fashions, Violet finds a refuge. Ellen O'Casey, an Irish Catholic immigrant, is struggling to support her ailing mother, her teenage daughter and herself. Washing other people's laundry in the day, and singing in bawdy pubs at night, Ellen is determined to make a better life for her family by saving enough for the passage to New York where the rest of her extended family have already emigrated.

But Danny Donovan, a local gangster and the landlord of the pubs where Ellen sings, intends to make her his mistress. It was the most moving thing I had ever seen…. A baby, a real live baby, another human life had entered the world. Born into a happy working-class North London family in the midth century, Katie is determined to 'do something' with her life.
Working in the impoverished East End in the s, she meets the Sisters of St John the Divine — a community of nuns dedicated to nursing and midwifery. The Sisters have been present at births, cared for the sick, and laid out the dead of the East Enders for a hundred years, and Katie soon joins them to start her journey to becoming Sister Catherine Mary. As a nurse and midwife, Katie learns to deal with everything from strokes to breech births.
Tragedy is never far away, but there are also moments of pure joy as lives are saved and the Poplar residents rally round. As a young novice Katie rallies against the vow of obedience, yet over the years learns much about the nature of dedication and love. This book gives you a insight into the lives of these Nuns and their work in the communities they live I'm.
This is a story and read like a story, with no dramatization or changing of voices for characters. I thought it would be more like Call The Midwife, with lots of funny bits and interesting case histories, but it isn't. It's really about one woman's faith journey as a nun, and she happens to be a midwife for several years along the way.
I stuck with it until the end, but it wasn't what I was expecting. What did you love best about Sisters of the East End? The honesty and faith in the characters. What was one of the most memorable moments of Sisters of the East End? When sister Catherine met The Lord at the crossroads of her faith and found God had not left her.subranacarco.cf/map6.php

How does this one compare? As real and clear as Call the Midwife was. Transported me into that time and social culture. If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Don't know. Any additional comments? I am keen to find similar books. I love them. Educating, entertaining Extremely well written and read!
